The history

At the end of the 1800s, Jean Janoueix, who was born in Corrèze in 1867, set up a wine merchant house in Meymac near Bordeaux. He prospected in Brittany where he established a loyal customer base thanks to the high quality of his portfolio. Later on, he persuaded his 4 sons and his son-in-law to join him to develop the business. His son Joseph followed faithfully in his footsteps but soon decided that it would be easier to promote his own wines. From then on, together with his sons and grandsons, slowly and surely he purchased an array of vineyards within the 6 appellations around Libourne. His dream was fulfilled in 1930 when he acquired Grand Cru Château Haut-Sarpe in Saint-Emilion area and founded his own merchant house in Libourne in 1932. A couple of years later, Joseph Janoueix married Marie-Antoinette Estrade, from another family from Corrèze whose father was also a wine merchant. Their son Jean-François took over from his father in the sales department and in turn fulfilled his very own special dream, to restore the latest acquisition – Château Le Castelot in Saint-Emilion.

Today

Jean-Pierre Janoueix, the manager of Joseph Janoueix SA, acquired in December 2015 Château Queyron and Château Haut Ferrandat 18 hectares, Saint-Emilion Grands Crus. Jean-Philippe Janoueix had acquired in April 2014 Château Cap d’Or (20 hectares), and 30 % of  Château Saint-Georges 57 ha, both Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion. Over 4 generations, the Joseph Janoueix family has remained united and are the masters of different castles. Their wines can be found in the Elysée’s cellars.

A spirit of innovation

Château Haut-Sarpe received the Historic Heritage Label from the Provincial Historic Heritage Commission on the 5th of October 2016. And lucky guests are invited to GlouGlou, the night club of the estate’s harvesters – a private bar with a great many stories to tell.
