COULY-DUTHEIL, A TALE OF GOOD MATCHES
The property was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil and built up by René Couly who married Madeleine Dutheil. Today the business is run by their sons Pierre and Jacques and their grandsons Arnaud and Bertrand. Jacques works relentlessly to distribute and promote Couly-Dutheil wines and he is manager of the business. Pierre works on public relations with the restaurant trade. Bertrand puts his skills to work in the vineyard and the winery where he oversees all vintage activities. As for hi-tech minded Arnaud, he has made sure the business is computer run. Gradually the Couly-Dutheil family has built up 83 hectares of vineyard and a wine merchant’s business.
The exceptionally mild semi-oceanic climate around Chinon brings with it very good sun exposure. The different soils and their intrinsic qualities allow the Cabernet Franc variety to express all its finesse – Rabelais spoke of "taffeta textured wines" – as the basis of a range of wines with distinct personalities. A long term strategy of hard work and respect for the environment to make good, carefully matured wine has been rewarded, because the Chinon appellation is now renowned for its high quality.
